Anything Is Possible
Do you believe that Anything is Possible? I do - let me tell you why.
Our brains, clever as they are, work based on the inputs that they have received from the past. Our brains also try to predict the future for us, in order to keep us safe. Can you guess what they are using in order to predict the future? Yep, you guessed it - it's the past.
If you think about this for a moment or two, can you start to see that what we think is possible for the future is constrained by the inputs our brain has had in the past?
It was not thought possible to run a mile in 4 minutes until Roger Bannister did it, it was not possible to run 100m in less than 9.6 seconds until Usain Bolt did it. See, once someone has done something we all benefit by being able to see that it’s possible!
Most of us, I would assert, aren’t going out there to break records that have never been done before. But we can look for more examples in everyday life.
It’s possible for families to heal because Joan at number 39 decided it was and reached out to her brother she hadn’t spoken to for 20 years. It’s possible to forgive people who have wronged you because Dave forgave the man that ran him over hospitalising him. I made these up but I’m certain that a quick Google search would have me find many examples of things that are possible just like this.
I know for myself that it's possible for a small business started from a front bedroom in a friend’s house to be successful enough that you can sell it and take 2 years off, because I did it!
Most of the time it’s actually about what we believe is possible for us and that’s all about self-belief. If you hear yourself saying ‘Well such-and-such could do it but I can’t because…………’ STOP - is that the truth or is it a belief that’s holding you back from achieving something?
Believing it's possible isn’t always enough
It isn’t always enough, but sometimes it is. Back in July this year, I put on a wetsuit, a lifejacket, and a crash helmet and then walked (through town I might add) to the coast. I stood on the edge of the cliffs of Wales about to jump off into the sea (yes, I paid for this experience) and for a moment I didn’t think I could do it, then I took a deep breath and jumped. Now, I may never do it again (I spent 4 hours in the sea jumping off higher and higher rocks until I jumped about 5m!) but I know it's possible.
Other things need you to take action, and sometimes believing it’s possible just gets you started on that first step. Sometimes you need to believe in it so much that you inspire other people to believe it too and they join your team. Sometimes you need to believe when you hit a bump and everyone else wobbles and starts to lose the possibility.
What is it that you think is not possible right now? How is it holding you back? What do you need to believe? Is it five minutes of courage to take that first step? Is it looking for people that have already done it and realising that they are human like you? Is it realising that you have your very own unique gifts to bestow upon the world and other people are waiting for someone to show them it's possible? Is it the strength and support to pick yourself up and dust yourself off because for a moment there it stopped looking possible?
Anything is possible if you say it is and if you take actions that align with your possibility. What could be possible in your world?
